“I’m being allowed to make mistakes because there’s something I need to learn.”

In episode 33, Tamar walks me through the path that led to her writing a book and founding the CEO Project, including some challenges she encountered along the way. She also shares a sampling of some of the “Truths” she discusses in her book.

Background:

Tamar Huggins Grant is an award-winning serial entrepreneur. She founded The CEO Project, an online training company that teaches business success using Godly principles and also founded  DRIVEN Accelerator Group, which is a nonprofit organization committed to improving the socio-economic status of marginalized people through technology-based programming. Tamar recently released a book titled Bossed Up: 100 Truths To Becoming Your Own Boss, God’s Way.” In 2015 Tamar was named the Harry Jerome Young Entrepreneur of the year, and honored as one of 100 Black Women to Watch.

Show Notes:

Her path to founding these ventures:

  • Started in advertising, but industry was too cut-throat. Wasn’t good for her health.
  • She was laid off but immediately knew it was a blessing

“I knew in my spirit that I wasn’t supposed to be there.”

  • Pursued PR career, then recognized a need for startup business advice
  • Started DRIVEN Accelerator Group – non-profit providing capital, advice to startups.
  • Realized one day that her credit was poor and she was swimming in debt. Was doing too much for others.

“We were giving giving giving…we don’t stop to replenish ourselves and we get burned out.”

  • Had to take a part-time job on the side in order to pursue her dream for the organization.
  • Started another non-profit – Tech Spark – to teach young people to see technology and entrepreneurship as a career option.
  • Last January, God told her it was time to write book to help others. Wrote it in three months and self-published.

“I’m not a self-made entrepreneur, I’m a God-made entrepreneur”

  • CEO Project came out of the book – for people who wanting coaching on the principles in the book.

On her book:

  • “Bossed Up: 100 Truths To Becoming Your Own Boss, God’s Way.”
  • Guide to help others become their own boss – showing how she did it by making God the CEO of her life.
  • She relates each truth to a life experience and a scripture.

Sample “truths” from the book:

  • Leave behind a legacy.

“What we do here as bosses, as entrepreneurs as leaders… it’s not for us.”

  • Fail fast.

“I’m being allowed to make mistakes because there’s something I need to learn.”

  • Don’t despise small beginnings.

People get so focused on the big picture and forget to acknowledge the progress they make along the way.
